Additional Proofreading for Translated Documents

Proofreading of a text after translation is as follows: an editor accepts translation from a translator, reads a text, edits (if necessary), makes notes for a client, sends for revision to a translator (if required), and matches the terminology (if a translation team worked on translation).

A proofreader must carefully read translation and keep a list of the mistakes noted. In general, this list will become an action card for a translation editor. Based on the report of a proofreader, quality of translation is assessed and a translator rating is made.

In some cases, a correction proposed by an editor isn’t a mistake. This should always be reported to a translator, while explaining why the revised version was accepted, but original translation isn’t a mistake. An editor should develop quality of criticizing translation, not a translator. If a document was very difficult to translate, for example, a specialized text, translation of a pdf document, urgent translation, an editor should write to a translator about it.

A proofreader must take into account that each translator has their own style. Each category of translation requires an individual approach, choosing a suitable translator. Translation categories are very important, because they determine the requirements for a translator and translation itself, as well as a cost of translation.

If there are mistakes in a source document and it’s of poor quality, an editor should warn a customer that translation of such text will be «average», although without mistakes.

Sometimes customers complain about the fact that translation was done using an electronic translator. This is groundless, there are usually no examples from clients, and translation of several sentences from the order, carried out by an electronic translator, doesn’t convince.

Without the services of proofreading, the executed order is working translation intended for practical use as a source of information. Quality control of translation can be limited by checking spelling and grammar.

After proofreading of translation by an editor, translation fully corresponds to an original and expresses the same communicative settings as an original text. Typically, this is written translation, intended for publication and distribution. Proofreading of a text is «connected» to all translation orders at a bureau.

Proofreading by a native speaker

When translating from Russian to a foreign language, at the request of a customer, proofreading can be performed. In this case, a text is given for testing by a translator or editor for whom the target language is native. This allows you to nullify stylistic inaccuracy of translation.

Proofreading by a native speaker is recommended if a text is intended for a wide audience: pages of a web-site, advertising and marketing materials, and artistic texts.
